Wilkins Consultancy

Feasibility and benefits realisation studies

For Pan London ICT Wilkins Consultancy undertook an assessment of the legacy systems and the data they contained to determine the feasibility of including them in the LSP contract for the London cluster to provide data to the National Spine, pending full implementation of the new ICRS systems.

During 2001, We undertook a LIS mapping exercise for the West London Database Project funded by NHS Executive London R&D. The mapping exercise covered the health organisations in the four health communities in West London to identify potential synergy with the West London database project and possible areas of incompatibility. The West London Database Project became NHS Lighthouse and we continued to provide consultancy support.

Wilkins Consultance was asked by the Avon Health Community to produce a feasibility study for a system to enable all primary and secondary care clinicians across Avon to view pathology results, irrespective of which hospital laboratory processed them. This study resulted a web-based system being the preferred option and we supported the health community in a successful bid for £1.7 million from the Pathology Modernisation Fund to implement it.

Commissioned by the NHS Executive Information Management Group, we undertook a study to review the benefits actually achieved by Health Authorities and General Practices from implementing Registration and Items of Service links – the first use of EDI messaging across the NHS. This compared the benefits achieved against those outlined in the original business case and the pilot outcomes reports. A Health Authority and General Practice in every Region of England and Wales were visited, selected to cover a wide range of experiences, and the systems suppliers were also consulted.

Wilkins Consultancy undertook a project evaluating opportunities for improving data quality in contract minimum datasets on using EDI and the NHS-wide clearing system for delivery. With organisations from all sectors in Suffolk we examined processes and systems for generating CDS, validation and correction, verification and processing. We estimated the possible costs and benefits from implementing the recommendations.
